About Joshua School Arusha, Tanzania

JSA is a Christian school providing quality education to underprivileged Tanzanian children as well as serving as a model school for both the Joshua Teachers Training College and teachers from government and private schools.

Joshua School Arusha (JSA) was set up in 2008 in response to the need for a school that models affordable, quality Christian education. Two Kiwis, Alan and Lynda Stephenson, saw the value of a holistic model of education that equips children with the tools needed to be creative and critical thinkers as opposed to a traditional model of rote learning. A values based curriculum has been implemented, giving students tools for life, not just knowledge. Class sizes are smaller than the norm, with a maximum of 30 children enabling teachers to engage with and value each child . Children are taught in English, which is needed for secondary level education. Tanzanian teachers have been trained at the Joshua Teachers Training College by volunteer expatriate teachers, so have seen a different way of teaching which inspires children and lifts achievement levels. Children born into poverty have a better chance of breaking the cycle when they are given these opportunities to succeed.

Joshua School Arusha (JSA) is a training school for the Joshua Teachers Training College (JTTC).  A few select students get the opportunity to be trained as apprentice teachers in this special environment.  With close supervision and personal mentoring these students have a big head start!  JSA teachers are boldly stepping up to the plate, mentoring students and visiting teachers into a teaching style that is definitely going ‘against the flow’ of typical Tanzanian education.

And of course the community is being impacted!  Parents are being involved and exposed to new thinking.  Can you really manage children without a stick in your hand? Is there really more to a report card than exam results?  Why is it so important that our children learn to be honest servant-hearted leaders?

By sponsoring a child in this school you supporting a learning community that is desperately needed in this nation.  Your donation means that JSA can:

-        salary a team of teachers who value children and holistic learning

-        feed children a nutritious meal each day

-        purchase sorely needed teaching resources

-        run a challenging professional development programme

-        mentor apprentice teachers in an effective personalised training programme
